The Book of Obadiah
oʊbəˈdaɪ.ə; is a Biblical theophorical name, meaning “servant of God” or “worshiper of Yahweh”. Also known as Abdi, Obdios, Ōvaḏyāh עֹבַדְיָה (Hebrew), Abdias (Latin) or Abdullah عبداللّٰه ʿ(Arabic). Christian traditions suggest he was born in Shechem, and was the third captain sent out by Ahaziah against Elijah around 586 B.C. and that he is buried in the same tomb as Elijah.
Obadiah is a respected Prophet in each of the world’s 3 major religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam. The focus of this film is to capture the Prophets words as scripted “word-for-word” in the Christian Bible using the royalty free World English Bible Version.
This is a ‘countercultural’ project as (in the Western Church) there has been a distinct rejection of the concept of God as “Judge”. This project aims to remind us that God does judge and re-introduce an Old Testament book in a fresh digital “word-for-word” movie format.

In its essence, Obadiah explores God’s judgement of Israel.
This is a ‘classic’ prophetic declaration against Israel while also being a solo journey of a prophets dialogue with God in the wilderness as he receives the ‘word of the Lord’.
The ‘style’ follows a long and rich history of ‘one-actor’ films with examples such as: Last Days in the Desert (Ewan McGregor), Castaway (Tom Hanks), 127 Hours (James Franco), Buried (Ryan Renolds), Secret Honor (Philip Baker Hall) most of which use a variety of techniques to keep the viewer engaged and connected to the narrative.
The dialogue only runs for 4 minutes so this film will be artfully shot in a day in one location using hand-held cameras and drone footage. This is an extremely simple yet elegant project. The director will use a variety of forms of dialogue; a night time dream sequence (God speaking) and speaking-to-self (as if preparing the speech to his people), talking back to God/landscape and dramatic ‘prophetic declarations’. Dramatic natural light (atmospheric) taking advantage of sunrise and sunset shots and moving through a number of backgrounds in the one location on the same day to the night-time sequence lit with a campfire in a natural setting.
An archetypal Middle-Eastern Prophet. Weathered, Bearded, Face lined and creased. Richness and Depth in the facial characteristics with piercing eyes.

The Book of Obadiah will make up an episode in a Netflix series called “Prophets” which feature a number of one-actor books shot “word-for-word” Joel, Obadiah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Haggai, Titus, 2 John, 3 John & Jude. Each ‘episode’ approx 20 minutes.
The goal with Obadiah is to create a ‘grass-roots’ revival in interest in the Bible. To promote this we will provide Christian Radio with a series of programs that point the listeners to the website to download and share the Obadiah movie as a product that introduces the viewer to the word-for-word Bible movie concept. Christian Radio is extremely strong in Australia with an audience of over 1 million people each week or over 3 million each month. UCB Radio has a national Distribution Network of over 400 radio stations in Australia. The Obadiah project will offer a series of 2 minute radio programs that will satisfy the ongoing need that radio stations have for content with the corresponding return of self-promotion in the program.

These films are another example of the rapidly growing and “grassroots” Christian “word-for-word” Bible movie genre. The Christian film industry is expanding rapidly in response to the recent shift in Western society towards socialism and secularism and a trend that is rejecting societies Judeo Christian foundations
In 2006, nearly 50 Judeo-Christian-faith films were produced. The films grossed an average $39 million. All five of the major Hollywood studios have created marketing departments to target the growing demand for faith-based and family fare. Movieguide publisher Ted Baehr said: “There is competition for the Christian audience now that there hasn’t been before. I thought at some point it would level off, but so far it’s getting bigger and bigger. It’s more than I could have possibly imagined. One of the audiences that has become stable and even grown for books, music and movies is the Christian audience.”
